What Is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is a collaborative process where a trained coach guides you to discover your strengths, identify challenges, and develop strategies for achieving meaningful goals. Unlike therapy, which often focuses on healing past issues, life coaching is future-oriented and geared towards maximizing your potential and improving various aspects of life, such as career, relationships, health, or personal fulfillment.

What is The Process Like?

The coaching process is a collaborative partnership designed to help an individual unlock their potential and achieve personal or professional goals. It’s not about giving advice but about guiding a person to find their own solutions. While specific models may vary, a common and effective framework can be broken down into five core steps that provide a clear and structured path for both the coach and the coachee.

1. Establish the Foundation

This initial phase is all about building a strong and trusting relationship. The coach and coachee work together to create a safe, confidential space where open communication can thrive. They define the coaching agreement, which clarifies roles, responsibilities, and the desired outcomes of the partnership. This step sets clear expectations and builds the rapport essential for meaningful progress..

2. Define the Goal

Once a solid foundation is in place, the focus shifts to clarifying what the coachee wants to achieve. The coach uses powerful, open-ended questions to help the individual articulate a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goal. This transforms a vague desire into a concrete, actionable objective that can be tracked and celebrated.

3. Explore the Current Reality

With a clear goal in mind, the coach facilitates a deep exploration of the coachee’s current situation. This involves understanding their existing challenges, strengths, resources, and any limiting beliefs that may be holding them back. By examining the current reality from multiple angles, the coachee gains a complete and honest picture of their starting point.

4. Generate Options and Create a Plan

This is the creative, brainstorming phase. The coach encourages the coachee to think expansively and generate a wide range of possible solutions and actions without judgment. After exploring these possibilities, the coach helps the coachee formulate a concrete action plan. This plan outlines specific steps, timelines, and accountability measures to move toward the goal.

5. Commit and Take Action

In the final step, the coachee commits to their action plan and begins to implement it. The coach provides support, encouragement, and helps the coachee anticipate and prepare for potential obstacles. Subsequent coaching sessions often involve reviewing progress, celebrating successes, and making adjustments to the plan as needed, ensuring continuous momentum toward the desired outcome.

2-Week “Ignition” Package

This intensive, short-term package is designed for a client with a very specific, well-defined goal they want to tackle quickly. It’s ideal for making a fast, focused change or for a “kick-start” project.

  • Structure:

    • Week 1: The focus is on clarifying the goal and exploring the current reality. The first two sessions are often dedicated to deeply understanding the objective, identifying key obstacles, and leveraging existing strengths.

    • Week 2: The next one to two sessions are all about creating a focused action plan and taking immediate action. The coach and coachee develop a clear, step-by-step strategy to make tangible progress, and the final session focuses on accountability and next steps.

  • Key Outcomes:

    • A single, well-defined problem is addressed.

    • A clear, actionable plan is created.

    • Tangible progress is made in a short amount of time.

4-Week “Momentum” Package

This package is perfect for clients who have a bigger goal they want to work on consistently, build new habits, or need a more structured approach to a moderate challenge. It allows for more reflection and adjustments along the way.

  • Session Frequency: Five to six 60-minute sessions over four weeks. This typically includes a kickoff session, weekly sessions, and a wrap-up session.

  • Structure:

    • Week 1: The foundation is established, and the goal is defined. This week is about building rapport and getting crystal clear on the “what” and the “why.”

    • Week 2: We explore the current reality and begin to generate options. The coachee gains a deeper understanding of their situation and starts brainstorming potential solutions.

    • Week 3: We create the action plan and the coachee begins taking action. This is where momentum really builds, with the coach providing support and accountability as the plan is put into practice.

    • Week 4: We review progress, address any new challenges, and solidify the new habits. The final session focuses on celebrating achievements and planning for continued success beyond the coaching relationship.

  • Key Outcomes:

    • A more complex goal is tackled with sustained effort.

    • New habits or mindsets are developed.

    • The client gains confidence and a repeatable process for problem-solving.

8-Week “Transformation” Package

This is a comprehensive package designed for clients seeking significant change. This could involve a career transition, developing new leadership skills, or a major personal development journey. The longer duration allows for deeper self-discovery, habit formation and long-term strategy building.

  • Session Frequency: Eight to ten 60-minute sessions over eight weeks. This typically includes a bi-weekly cadence with more frequent check-ins as needed.

  • Structure:

    • Weeks 1-2: The initial focus is on deep-dive discovery. We establish the foundation, define both short-term and long-term goals, and explore the client’s values, strengths, and underlying beliefs.

    • Weeks 3-4: We move into exploring reality and strategy. The client identifies key patterns and obstacles, and we start to generate a variety of options and strategies to create a comprehensive plan.

    • Weeks 5-7: The emphasis is on consistent action and reflection. The client puts the plan into motion, and we use coaching sessions to review progress, learn from both successes and setbacks, and adjust the approach as needed. This is the period where new behaviors are solidified.

    • Week 8: The final week is dedicated to sustainability. We review the entire journey, celebrate the transformation, and create a plan to ensure the client maintains their new habits and continues their growth independently.

  • Key Outcomes:

    • Significant, long-lasting personal or professional change.

    • New skills, mindsets, and habits are fully integrated.

    • A deep understanding of self and a clear long-term vision.
